“For much of her life that I knew her, Mom liked to be called Paula, but I guess with Alzheimer’s, things can go back a ways sometimes. So, in this last bit, she was known as Geraldine again. She was born in Hondo, an Air Force brat. She had fond memories of traveling to Europe, and of living in California, most notably Vandenberg AFB, before moving back and completing high school in Devine. She moved to Austin, and married an idealistic hippie, my dad. As time told, with some experience, marriage and my mom were not to be longstanding companions. She always gave her everything to be the best Mom to her only child. Her job was with Civil Service, and she has worked at Lackland, Randolph, and also for Fish and Wildlife. She went on to be one of a line of Calame family owners and operators of the original Calame Store, established in Devine, in 1936, by her grandparents. She helped to raise her two granddaughters, until she was no longer able. She is the best Mom I could hope for, and here presence until we are rejoined through the promise of Jesus, will be sorely missed. Even so, as I tell her granddaughters, she became me, and I became them. Seeing them play, the look on their faces, it can’t help but be true. We love you Mom, Grandma.”
