Ivan Roy Chant

October 9, 1944 — July 5, 2021

Ivan Chant went to be with his Lord and Savior on July 5, 2021 after a lengthy illness. Ivan was born on October 9, 1944, in Uvalde, Texas to Altah Lee (Tenny) Luce Chant and Novie Ernest (N.E.) Chant. Ivan was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Chris Chant, and mother-in-law,
Helen (Poore) Larkin.

The Chants moved to Devine in 1949 where Ivan attended Devine schools and graduated in 1963. In high school, he participated in varsity track, baseball, and football. His senior year, he was voted Campus Favorite and was a tri-captain for the Warhorse football team among other awards. Ivan married his high school sweetheart, Jalyne Poore, and they were blessed with four children; Terri, James, and twins, Kim and Todd.

Ivan first worked for San Antonio City Public Service for several years but also had many "side" jobs such as welding and bee-keeping. He began his 30-year career with ENCO/Exxon in 1969. At Exxon, he worked his way up the ranks from truck driver to become the San Antonio Exxon's Terminal and Fleet Superintendent. Over the years, he was offered promotions at Exxon with the condition that he relocate, but he declined those offers so he could stay and raise his family in Devine. Ivan won various awards while working with Exxon including the Annual Exxon Truck "Road"eo . After his retirement in 1999, Ivan kept busy by visiting and working on their ranch in Camp Wood tending to their goats, raising cattle at their farm in Devine, and was extremely involved with his church.

While raising his family and during retirement, Ivan enjoyed fishing at Choke Canyon and Falcon Lake with friends and family. Deer season was one of his favorite times of the year, but his greatest pleasure came from the kids retelling their deer story after a successful hunt. Ivan loved sports and was an avid fan of Texas teams, following baseball and football religiously. He was also a great supporter of the Devine Warhorses and Arabians, especially football and volleyball, and thoroughly enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren participate in sports, band, and other UIL activities.

A life-long citizen of Devine, Ivan was well known in the community and could strike up a conversation with any friend or stranger at the post office or while eating his breakfast taco at a local restaurant. He had an outgoing personality and was a great storyteller, adding humor to make others smile.

Ivan was a member of the Natalia Church of Christ where he served as an elder, song-leader, and Bible class teacher. As an elder, he saw to many repairs of the church himself and would often take members to doctor appointments or medical treatments. Ivan was a devout Christian, putting his faith and family first; he loved his church, his family, friends, the community of Devine and will be missed by so many.

Ivan is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jalyne; daughter Terri Menges (Sam) of Devine; son James Chant (Liz) of San Antonio; daughter Kim Stevens (Dirk) of Devine; and son Todd Chant (Kristy) of Spokane, Washington; grandchildren Wesley Menges of Devine, Aaron Menges of San Antonio, Natasha Yanuszeski (Drew) of Spokane, Washington, Joshua Chant (Melina) of New Braunfels, Kaitlyn, Rachel, and Gwynn Chant of Spokane, Washington, and Allison and Wyatt Stevens of Devine; great-grandchildren Calvin and Dawson Yanuszeski, Colton Chant, Addy Menges, and Hallie Menges; sisters Carolyn Wiemers (Duane) of Hondo and Glenda Allen (Kenny) of Devine; sister-in-laws Elizabeth Chant of Eden, Sherry Lewis of San Antonio, and Elyse Allen (Ken) of San Antonio; brother-in-law Arlon Scott of Louisville, Kentucky; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
