James Nelson Wilkins, age 86 of Devine, Texas made his peaceful journey to Heaven on Monday, January 4, 2021, under Hospice care at his home in Devine, Texas, surrounded by his wife and family.
James was born in Atascosa County near the Bigfoot area attending Devine school in 11th grade, playing sports, and receiving awards for his skills in playing. On October 8, 1934, James was born at home, delivered by his Mother Roxie Ann Peterson Wilkins, with his father, James W. Wilkins at her side.
June 12, 1955, James married his love and partner for life, Ruth Allen. James and Ruth worked together for over 65 years, having four children and several businesses.
In James’ early years, he worked at Loggins and Lilly’s Store. In the summer he worked the peanut fields, hoeing, and threshing peanuts – tailing the thresher. About 1953, James started working at Wilson Chevrolet, attaining the position of parts manager and later service manager. James, Ruth and their children spent many summers at Port A and Rockport fishing and camping in their trailer or motor home. They took trips across the country, through many states. The four children Doug, Susan, Allen, Bruce, and their families have all helped in the different businesses. I & W auto parts was in business from 1963 to July 5, 2015, when a fire destroyed the store and contents. The oil business, overseen and worked by James and his crew ran until it was sold. RW Dozer works operated in the 1970s. After the fire at I & W we retired, came home to take care of each other. We have really missed the business life and our customers.
James is survived by his wife, Ruth Allen; children Doug (Kathy) Wilkins, Susan (Richard) Chacon, Allen (Sherrie) Wilkins, Bruce (Gina) Wilkins.
