Louis Mae was born on April 7, 1919, in Terryville, Texas when her parents were visiting her grandparents. Her father passed away suddenly when Louis Mae was three months old. She grew up on a farm just outside Yoakum with her mom and step-dad. Louis Mae cherished her years in school and loved to learn new things. Her life changed dramatically when she married Fred Gordon Carnes in 1936, and moved to a ranch near Pearsall a few years later. She loved country life and cherished making a home for her family.
Louis Mae was an avid quilter and seamstress and would play a competitive game of 42 whenever she got the chance. She loved living on the family ranch for nearly 80 years and treasured the times that family and friends would come for a visit. She was active in the Christian Church of Pearsall for many years as well as the United Methodist Church in more recent years. She also cherished being a part of Christian Women’s Club, Extension Homemakers club, Fun Friday, Mission Quilters, and enjoyed community events. She loved to travel and went on many tours, making friends and sweet memories along the way. In her later years, she made quilts with her Mission Quilters for families she heard about that had lost their home to a fire or storm and made dressed for orphans.
