Martha Ann Barnhill

September 29, 1948 — July 1, 2024

Our mother, Martha Ann Wells Barnhill, of Devine, Texas, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 1, 2024, after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 75.

Martha was born in Hondo on September 29, 1948, the second of three children born to Coy and Neta Wells. She grew up in Devine, attended Devine high school, and always called Devine her home. Over the course of her life, Martha worked as a musician, a waitress, a bookkeeper, a property manager, a nurse, and even a bartender, briefly, but what defined her and her life was her commitment to her children. She became a single mother at a time when independent women were stigmatized, or endured discrimination, but she had little choice but to be strong. When she remarried, she relied on the same strength, determination, and sense of purpose to help shape her growing family. Like all of us, she had her flaws, but in the end, her hard work and dedication helped each of us find our place in the world. We are grateful for the time we had with her. Hers is a legacy of love, grace and humility that touches four generations: She was a good mother, a wonderful grandmother, and a doting great-grandmother who will be missed by all who loved her.

She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Forrest Keith Barnhill; her parents, Coy F. Wells and Martha O'neta Wells; and her brother, Richard Wells. She is survived by her brother Kenneth Wells and wife, Terri, of New Braunfels; her daughters Shana Beaty of Devine, Michelle Taylor of San Antonio, and Tara Barnhill of San Antonio, and her son, Troy McGinnis of Las Vegas, NV; her grandchildren, Maverick Beaty, Nolan Beaty, R. Dalton Taylor, Drew R. Taylor, Zachary Eisenmann, Abigail Eisenmann, and Kiffin McGinnis; her great-grandchildren, Althea McGinnis, Elijah McGinnis, and Ryder Burleson; numerous nieces and nephews around the state and country; and her dear friend Linda Narezo, who became family to us all.
